Operation Crossroads: atomic bomb tests Able and Baker at Bikini Atoll
Report · written 1946 · released May 1985
Why this matters
Joint Task Force One's report on the July 1946 tests that exposed a fleet of target ships to two atomic detonations at Bikini Atoll. The underwater Baker shot contaminated the lagoon so badly that many ships could not be decontaminated, an early lesson in radioactive fallout. The Bikini islanders, relocated for the tests, never returned to stay.
