Declassified Satellite Imagery – 1 (CORONA, ARGON, LANYARD), USGS EarthExplorer

Dataset · written 1960 · released February 1995

Why this matters

More than 860,000 spy-satellite images taken from 1960 to 1972, declassified by executive order in 1995 and searchable through USGS EarthExplorer. Archaeologists, glaciologists and historians use them to see landscapes before modern development. Downloads are free, but the portal is notoriously clunky.
